Aspen in winter with children: four mountains, one town and a runway closure to know about

Aspen's reputation as a grown-up resort obscures something its own operators are keen to point out: it is four separate mountains under one lift ticket, and two of them were built with children in mind. Add a compact town with an outdoor ice rink and a free sledding hill, and the case for a family week is easy to make from official sources alone — with one logistical caveat that anyone planning a spring 2027 trip should read first.

Buttermilk: where the learning happens

Aspen Snowmass describes Buttermilk as "a mountain playground loved by all," with "groomers and tree stashes, world-class terrain parks, incredible uphilling events, and X Games Aspen." Its positioning is deliberately unintimidating: "Accessible in every way, the Buttermilk ski area invites you to fall in love with what skiing and riding in Aspen is all about: having fun." The children's centre, The Hideout, is billed as the place "where kids fall in love with snow," and the terrain parks are "enjoyed by beginners and pros alike."

Buttermilk is also where the X Games land each winter — "nearly 100 of the world's top winter athletes" competing in what the resort calls "the biggest snow sport event of the year." For a family, that is either the best week of the season or the one to avoid; check the dates against your own before booking a Buttermilk-side stay.

Snowmass: the ski-in, ski-out village

Snowmass is, in the resort's words, "larger than our three other mountains combined," offering "burly steeps, inviting glades, and endless bumps, jumps, and groomers." The number that matters to parents is this one: "95% of Snowmass' lodging is ski-in, ski-out." A child who can put skis on at the door and be on the Elk Camp lift — "the upgraded Elk Camp 6-pack chairlift," with views of the Maroon Bells — has a different holiday from one who is loaded into a car each morning. The resort markets Snowmass Village to "families of every size," with "dining, shopping, entertainment, and even s'mores, for all ages."

Sage's usual recommendation is therefore simple: base a family with younger children at Snowmass, ski Buttermilk for lessons, and treat Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands as the days out for the adults.

In town, off the mountain

The Aspen Chamber Resort Association's own winter itinerary for children is unglamorous and useful. The Aspen Recreation Center has "a sledding hill just behind the building, which is free to use," with sleds "available to purchase for $20 with a signed waiver," plus a climbing wall and an indoor ice rink. "Aspen's only outdoor ice rink" sits beside CP Burger downtown. The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies runs programming "ranging from snowshoeing to photography," the Aspen Art Museum offers "Family Workshops," the Pitkin County Library holds storytime by age group, and the Red Brick Recreation Center opens its Playhouse Gym for reserved drop-in sessions. None of it requires a lift ticket, which matters on the third day, when someone is tired.
