Carnival 2027: planning the Caribbean season from Junkanoo to Trinidad

The Caribbean carnival year does not begin in February. It begins in the dark, on Bay Street in Nassau, a few hours into New Year's Day, and it does not really end until the last Sugar Mas costume is packed away the following January. For travellers who want to build a season around it — a villa in St. Barths for the February parades, a suite in Port of Spain for J'Ouvert, a return in August for Crop Over — the difficulty is not finding the festivals. It is trusting the dates.

How our calendar is built

The Sage carnival calendar for 2027 holds 57 events, from Junkanoo on 1 January to the Boxing Day parades in Providenciales. Every one of them carries the same status: pending verification. That is deliberate. The entries were modelled on each festival's traditional placement in the year — the pre-Lenten carnivals fall on the days before Ash Wednesday, Crop Over closes on the first Monday in August, Junkanoo belongs to Boxing Day and New Year's Day — and a Sage editor confirms each one against the organiser's own published schedule before the status changes. Until then, the calendar tells you when to expect a festival; it does not promise a parade route or a start time.

Junkanoo, Nassau

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism describes Junkanoo as a celebration held "on Boxing Day — aka the day after Christmas — as well as on New Year's Day and many Saturdays throughout the summer." The largest parade "takes place on Bay Street, in downtown Nassau," and it "starts in the wee hours after midnight," with organised groups "of up to 1000 people" spending most of the year on costumes and music. Book a room within walking distance of Bay Street and accept that you will not sleep on the night of 31 December.

Trinidad, the pre-Lenten anchor

Trinidad's official destination site is precise about the shape of the season: "festivities begin just after Christmas and culminate on Ash Wednesday." Panorama, "the world's premiere steel band competition," culminates "on the Saturday before Carnival," with "60 to 80 bands" of "75 to 200 musicians" each. Dimanche Gras stages the Kings and Queens competition alongside the finals of the National Calypso Monarch. Then J'Ouvert "kicks off at 4:00 a.m. on Carnival Monday morning," with participants "covered in paint, mud, and oil," before the mas bands take the streets in feathers, beads and sequins. The National Carnival Commission, the state body that runs the festival, currently shows a "Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2027 Countdown" but has not yet published the 2027 calendar of events; our entry for Carnival Monday and Tuesday stays pending until it does.

Because the pre-Lenten carnivals share a calendar, the same February days bring Guadeloupe, Martinique, Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire and St. Barths to a head at once. If you want two of them in one trip, plan the inter-island flights before the hotel.
