Maui's luxury is concentrated on two coasts: Wailea in the south (Four Seasons, Grand Wailea) and Kapalua in the west (Montage, Ritz-Carlton), both with reliable sun, golf and calm morning seas. The Road to Hāna, the summit of Haleakalā at dawn and whale-watching from December to April are the essential experiences. Spring and autumn shoulder seasons offer better rates than Christmas and summer. The August 2023 Lahaina wildfire devastated that historic town; visitors are welcomed back to West Maui, and travellers should follow current local guidance and support community businesses respectfully. Rent a car — there is no practical alternative. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by state law.
