Marrakech

Marrakech divides into the medina (the walled old city of souks, riads and the Jemaa el-Fna square), the French-built Gueliz and Hivernage districts, and the Palmeraie, where the large resort estates sit among palm groves. The Royal Mansour, La Mamounia and Amanjena define the top end, but converted riads inside the medina offer a more intimate luxury. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer regularly exceeds 40°C. Dress modestly outside resorts, negotiate prices in the souks with good humour, agree taxi fares before departure, and be aware of unofficial "guides." Day trips to the Atlas Mountains (Kasbah Tamadot) and the Agafay desert are easy; Essaouira on the coast is three hours away.
