Rice terraces, cliff-top temples and the world's best-value villa luxury — Bali is many islands in one.

Bali's regions could not be more different: Ubud in the interior is the wellness and cultural centre, with jungle-edge villas above the Ayung river; Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu on the south coast are beach clubs, surf and sunset cliffs; Nusa Dua is the gated resort enclave; the east and north are quiet. The dry season from April to October is the time to go; the wet season is green, humid and cheaper. Bali is Hindu, and temple etiquette (sarong and sash, no entry during menstruation, modest dress) matters. Traffic is heavy, so plan around geography — Ubud to Uluwatu can take two hours. Renting a scooter without a licence and helmet is a leading cause of tourist injury; use drivers. Check current Indonesian visa-on-arrival and tourist-levy rules before travel.
